Neutral Fault and Outlet Fire on an Agricultural Site
A continuous current of more than 300 mA was detected on two electrical panels at an agricultural site through PrevTech's network monitoring. The persistent anomaly triggered a proactive follow-up by our team, allowing us to identify a neutral fault directly linked to the ignition of an industrial outlet, and to intervene before the situation could escalate further.
Context
On an agricultural site combining production equipment and washing areas, the complexity of the electrical network puts continuous stress on its components. A fault on the neutral conductor can remain invisible for weeks while generating stray currents, localized overheating, and a growing risk of incident. Without continuous monitoring, this type of anomaly is rarely detected before a visible, and sometimes severe, event occurs.
What Was Detected
Continuous current of more than 300 mA recorded without interruption by PrevTech sensors.
The anomaly persisted even after all breakers were turned off, indicating current circulating outside the normal protection path.
Remote diagnosis immediately pointed the analysis toward a neutral fault.
On-Site Findings
When contacting the client, our expert learned that an industrial outlet had just caught fire while a washing machine was being unplugged.
The photo sent by the client confirmed the extent of the damage: charred outlet, contacts blackened by electrical arcing, melted plastic around the receptacle.
The inspection confirmed a neutral fault as the root cause of the overheating and ignition.
Why It Matters
A fault on the neutral conductor is one of the most dangerous anomalies in an electrical installation. It can unbalance loads, generate stray currents, damage connected equipment, and cause localized overheating that may escalate to ignition.
In agricultural environments, often humid and densely equipped, the risk of fire and propagation is significantly amplified. An outlet incident is rarely isolated, it is the signal of an underlying problem that must be addressed immediately.
Intervention
Automatic and continuous detection of the anomaly by the PrevTech system.
Proactive call to the client by our expert team to report the persistent fault.
Connection made between the on-site outlet fire and the anomaly measured remotely.
Targeted diagnosis pointing to a neutral fault.
Immediate recommendation for a qualified electrician to replace the outlet and conduct a full circuit inspection.
Coordination with the client to quickly secure authorization to intervene.
Outcome
A major electrical risk contained in time. Thanks to continuous monitoring and the proactive intervention of the PrevTech team, the neutral fault was identified and immediately linked to the outlet fire, allowing a targeted electrical intervention before the situation could escalate into a more serious event.
What to Watch For
Residual current persisting even after all breakers in a panel have been turned off.
Signs of overheating or charring on industrial outlets, particularly in agricultural settings.
High-demand equipment, such as washing machines or motors, connected to circuits where a neutral fault is suspected.
